Where to open a bank account (if you need one)

Post  Fredrik on July 15th 2011, 10:44

There a few main bank branches in Sweden: Handelsbanken, Swedbank, SEB and Nordea. You can open a bank account at anyone of these banks. However what kind of services the banks offer for exchange students differs some. For a full service bank account including Internet access, debit card etc. the banks require that you have a Swedish social security number. To obtain one you need to stay in Sweden for at least 12 months. Without a social security number the amount of services the banks can provide is limited.

Always bring your passport, residence permit (if that applies to you) and letter of acceptance from LTU.

According to previous exchange students the best alternatives are Handelsbanken and Swedbank.
